Clayton's First School Program

Clayton was so excited about his school program today, that he had many comments and requests to share. Such as, "Will you make me a special sparkly shirt to wear?" and "Don't worry, Mom. I won't cry."

But it wasn't until the story started, that I realized he was to play Joseph in the story of Christmas. He was such a sweet performer; held "Mary's" hand and walked from one side of the staging area to another. Then sat down next to the laundry basket (aka...the baby manger) and smiled. It was perfect!

The kids then stood and sang Christmas songs..."Santa Claus is Coming to Town", "Jingle Bells", "We Wish You a Merry Christmas", and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"! Too bad my videography skills weren't as good as they should have been and I missed the majority of the songs. I did manage to get the Christmas Story Play!! (I should get points for that! LOL)

Such wonderful memories for Moms, Dads, and the students themselves! Thanks for all the hardwork teachers!

A Girl and Her Shoes

I don't think that I have "taught" Maecie to love shoes; it's just something that has come natural to her. If she sees a pair of shoes, she has to try them on. If she likes them, have fun getting them off again!

No, she can't count to 10. She doesn't know what a cow says. But she can say "shoes" and "chocolate". Sounds like she's got it right to me!

Short Stories from Little Beares

1. On the way to meeting a friend for lunch, Clayton decides to put his finger in a hole on his booster seat. He fusses that his finger is stuck and it results in me having to pull over on the side of the road to remove it. So I do and end up scraping his finger as it comes out of a hole too small for his finger to fit! Of course, then we need medicine and a bandage. So I stop at Walgreens and purchase Neosporin and bandages....which cost $11!!! How outrageous!!! But all was better with Clayton and he "just hopes it heals"!

2. Maecie has entered a new phase. She has realized she can take off and put on (well, almost put on) her own clothes. So while I'm washing dishes in the kitchen, and hear her little feet patter down the hallway. A few minutes later, I hear "Mom.....Mama!!" And when I enter her room, she is half naked with a shirt stuck around her mid-section. She wants to pick out her own clothes and if you don't let her, it's a complete meltdown! She is only 20 months old!

3. Clayton will be performing his first Christmas performance next week at school. When I asked him to perform for me, he said I would have to wait. However, when I told him I would video tape him, the ham came out! He stood in front of the Christmas tree and sang a couple of songs. I will have to upload some footage later!

4. Maecie is all about sitting in your "yap" (lap) and reading books. She even likes to sit in Clayton's lap. So this afternoon, she brought a book and sat in her brother's "yap" so he could read it to her. He flipped through the pages, told the story in his own way, and she loved it. It was the cutest thing to watch. Luckily I had my video camera out for that too!

I enjoy spending time with my kids so much! I would never want to miss out on these short stories!

Grateful for the Little Ones!

These are just a few pictures fom our Three Day Thanksgiving holiday with my family. I was having too much fun watching the cousins play with each other to take lots of pictures!

Two cute hams, just hanging out, cleaning Grammie's kitchen cubbards out!

Clayton loved hanging out with his older cousins, especially when they had cool electronics to play with!

Of course, having a heated pool at the hotel did not hurt our good times!

I am so thankful for my family and for all of the cute children (old and young) that I can call neices and nephews. They definitely can make us laugh!

Sibling Love

Can all siblings be this cute?!

Maecie will rarely hold my hand when walking in parking lots or down the street. However, she loves her big brother and will hold his hand. And for now, he likes to hold her hand too! I hope they love each other like this forever!

4 Year Old Friends!

Bodo, Ephraim, and Sam ... these are the names of Clayton's imaginary friends!

Bodo was the first and came from his shirt. Bodo is a spitter, is very small, and sometimes gets stuck in trees. One day we had some friends come over to the house, one of which was a 5 year old girl. The kids were in and out of the house, playing. At some point Bodo got stuck in the tree. The 5 year old girls was so concerned she even came inside to tell her mom she was helping Clayton get his friend out of the tree. However, she was having a hard time finding him!

Ephraim and Sam, more affectionately known as Clayton's brothers, came after pre-school started. At first I thought they were classmates of his. Then I noticed the names hanging on the door outside of the classroom. Unfortunately none of them were named Ephraim or Sam. So I began to ask Clayton who these people were. "They are my brothers mom! We are going camping and need to pack my suitcase. Will you help me?" Of course, I oblige my son and he proceeds to take a blanket and toys outside to the driveway where he plays for a while before returning to the house.

I didn't realize how important these friends were to Clayton until this month. At school, the teachers made a big turkey and the feathers were used to display what the kids were most thankful for. Clayton's response? My brothers! Where some kids have cute, sweet tributes, such as their mom and dad, their favorite foods, etc, my kid has his imaginary friends! Today, his teacher asked if he might actually have brothers. You know, sometimes there are extended family members or adopted siblings and such. However, I had to smile and respond that Clayton just has imaginary friends.

With this kid, there is never a dull moment! And I never know who will be entering our family next!!

Practicing for a Baby....

Sister!!

The kids are excited about their new baby sister! So we had to take some pics to practice...

I think she will be a great big sister!

I have to admit, I was a little on the fence about whether or not to find out this baby's gender. However, now that we know, we have actually decided on different rooming situations. Instead of Clayton and Maecie sharing, like we originally thought, Maecie and baby will share. That way Clayton can have his own room. Poor guy is going to be outnumbered! But I think he will make it!!

Excited to start this new chapter of our lives!! However....now Patrick and I are outnumbered! AHHH!

The Princess and the Ponderer

A picnic in the park resulted in some cute pictures of the most adorable children I know.

Princess Maecie wanted to play

Clayton had another way to spend his time...

Not sure if he just loved his lunch or had some grand insight at this time, but he was absolutely too cute to not watch!

Family Fun Times Part II

A couple of weeks ago, we took advantage of a little down time at work for Dad and visited the Great Wolf Lodge. Where else can you go, park your car, and never have to leave? There's food, indoor waterpark, putt putt, arcarde, storybook time, and more! The kids had a hard time going to bed, but can you blame them?!

The kids showing off their bunk beds for the night!

The lighting inside the waterpark was not so great, even with the flash. But the kids are having a ball in the water!!

The "Good Times" armbands ... Clayton loved his so much, he kept it on for a full week before he wanted to take it off!

So not a lot of pics, I know. But Mom and Dad didn't look so hot in their swimsuits! LOL!!

Such a Great Age!

At 4 years old, Clayton is so much fun to be with. He has his favorite toys to play with (dinosaurs-the T-rex ones that like to eat everyone else), his favorite TV shows (which for now is Wild Kratts that talks about animals and their environment and such, cute, but cheesy!), and even his favorite foods (which have branched out to include broccoli and green beans! One happy mama here!). Everytime he sees a commercial, he figures out who might best benefit from the product shown, and then proceeds to tell me why that person would want one. So when it's a baby doll, he will say "Maecie would be so happy with that doll mom!". Or if it's an action toy, "Mom, that's so cool! Can you buy me one of those?!". Or my favorites, the latest steam mop, to which he says, "Mom, if you buy that mop, you can really get the house clean!".

There is just never a dull moment! Clayton is also loving school and enjoys doing his homework. I love that he gets excited when he writes his name or when he counts to 20 without missing a number. It is refreshing to this mama's teacher heart!

At almost 18 months old, Maecie follows everyone around and tries to imitate what we do and say. So while I am cleaning, she wants to grab a towel and wipe the floors or counters too. While Clayton is bouncing on his bed, she wants to bounce too. And even better, when we fold our arms to say family or mealtime prayers, she folds her arms too!

As her vocabulary increases, she is sure to tell us when something is "mine" and she doesn't want you to take it away. Or grabbing our faces and honking our noses since she can now say and identify "nose". She loves to dance around when she hears music, and especially loves "pat-a-cake" and "itsy-bitsy spider" since she can do all of the movements.

Yep, I'd say 4 years and 18 months are great ages!! Love those kids of mine...

Clayton's First Day of Preschool!

Today was Clayton's first day of preschool. He was very excited to go and did a great job!! He even sang to Maecie this morning that "Brother's going to schoo-ool and you are noo-oot!".

When I picked him up, he said he had a good day, but was worried I wasn't coming to pick him up! I reassured him that I would always pick him up. And he said he was ready to go back tomorrow.

When we got home, he wanted to make a craft. This is what he came up with:

He told me the tape was necessary to make the picture complete. What a big boy and big imagination!

At preschool, good students receive a sticker at the end of the day. One of Clayton's friends got one, so I asked Clayton if the teacher gave him one today. His response was no. When I asked him why not, he said, "I wasn't being a good listener. There was a caterpillar and I wanted to see it." Apparently all it takes is a caterpillar for my son to stray from the line! LOL....oh to be a fly on the wall!

The New Mommy in Me

I firmly believe that answers come when we have the desire to know. Heavenly Father knows what is in our hearts, what weighs on our minds, and wants to be there for us.

About 2 years ago, when I was pregnant with Maecie, my burning question was whether or not I should at home with my children, not working outside of the home. Even before marriage and children I worked a full-time job. When I graduated college, I went straight to the classroom. I was unsure what stay-at-home mothers did. I didn't know if I would be any good at it. However, I felt it was the right move. I felt that my children needed me more than the schools and more than my extra paycheck. I felt even more confident of this when changes in my career occurred and my options were being limited.

As confident as I was in that change and that it was the correct move, for my family, I have been even less confident in being the "perfect mom". All mothers have "mom worry" and "mom envy". We worry that we are allowing our children to watch too much TV, or that they don't know how to count to 100 by the age of 3. We envy those moms that have houses that seem to be always clean while still playing with the children. But they are simply mental obstacles. There isn't a mom, that I have met, that feels they are doing everything perfectly. Because, in truth, we aren't. However, we are all doing the best we can and the best we know how.

When I had my first child, Clayton, I think I lost myself. I started stressing over when he was fed, when he slept, how long we played, and that dinner was ready for my husband when he got home. I thought so much about everyone else that I forgot to think about myself. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. And yet, I have to take a time out for me. I still worked a full time job, had to keep the house clean, do all of the shopping and more. {Reflecting on it now, I have NO idea how this was accomplished. Other than it probably wasn't accomplished.}

When I was in high school and college, I was incredibly happy. I was constantly on the go, with a smile on my face and a song in my head. I was dancing and playing and having a great time. But once adulthood really set in and I became a mom, a homemaker, a teacher, all rolled into one, I let some of that excitement and happiness slide. I no longer danced on stools and sang with wooden spoons. In a sense, I was no longer me.

Over the course of the years, I have read inspirational books, prayed hard, talked with family and friends, and nothing seemed to change. I wanted a "fix" for my rut. It hasn't been until the last week that I have felt a change.

It began on Sunday while at church. We were having a discussion about desires and priorities in Relief Society {al all women class}. Someone remarked that Satan tries to make us feel like we are unworthy mothers. That we are not doing enough for our children, husbands, or families. However, when we are doing our best, we are doing all that the Lord asks of us. If He did not have faith in our abilities, we would not have the opportunities given to us. This made me think that I needed to double check to ensure my desires and priorities were in the correct order. If I put the Lord first, the the cooking, cleaning, and care giving would fall into place. So I made a resolution to do just that. I would dive into reading the scriptures. I would be sure to say my prayers and be a good example of faith for my children. I woke Monday morning with a little pep in my step.

As the day progressed, something unimaginable occurred. A friend passed away. She left behind 4 small children and a husband that depended on her to keep the household running. I was stopped in my tracks. What if something happened to me? Would my children think of me as a happy person? Or the one who fussed at them? Would they know what was important to me? Would they remember having fun with me? Or that I was always cleaning?

It wasn't until Tuesday afternoon that the switch happened. We were riding in the car and Alanis Morrisette's "Ironic" song came on the radio. It was a song I remembered singing with friends during middle school/high school years. It reminded me of all the songs I sang in the car with friends or at friend's houses. I immediately grabbed the water bottle and began singing. I sang the entire song at the top of my lungs. My husband looked at my oddly and my children sat in their seats stunned. They had never seen me do this before. How could I go through life not singing my favorite tunes with fake microphones? Hello?! I have done that my entire life, and yet, not in the last 5 or 6 years. I have to bring myself back! I have to be me for my family so they know the real me! {Does that even make sense to anyone?!}

I have made it a full 24 hours. I worked a little on laundry while the kids played this morning. Then we ran all around town running errands and doing our previously scheduled things. We ate dinner at the table as a family. And finished the evening with baths, a walk around the neighborhood, books, and no TV! Focusing on the family, spending quality time with them, and reminding the of the love of Heavenly Father is my job! The laundry and dishes can wait. I think I have found the new mommy in me!

{Hoping I get this all right from the beginning with little Beare #3 :) }

Clayton's Birthday Week

Clayton turned 4 on July 20th. I think that his Summer Birthday is sometimes unfair since he will never have cupcakes in the classroom and such. Or maybe that's just my excuse for having Birthday Week!

Birthday Week is a week long celebration of a birthday. It may include, but is not limited to, playdates of various activities, cakes, candy, prizes, etc. This year, we had tons going on, so we limited ourselves to 3 activities, but had a BLAST doing so!

The first day, we bowled! Lots of fun was had with friends!!

Another day we played at the splashpad...then had TCBY ice cream!

We ended with a fantastic Waterslide Party! Here is the cake made by "The Cake Lady"!

This is a very excited little 4 year old! The waterslide was a HUGE hit!

The starting point....

The ride down....

And the finale...a big splash!!

Lost....

Every house has one. Heck, probably every car, room, and purse has one! It's the Land of the Lost Items!

You know, the place where all of those lost things go. You know they are around there somewhere, but just can't seem to find them. How many times have you lost your keys, chapstick, or an earring in your purse? Or your remote control at home? Or how many times have you lost just one shoe? Hello?! You didn't just wear one the last time you went out. I know these items are around the house. But where the HECK are they?!

I wish I knew where the Land of the Lost Items were at my house. Then I could find Maecie's shoe (yes, just one shoe), my black pair of sunglasses, my new scoop and measuring spoons (that are still in their package, just purchased from Pampered Chef!), and even my book. I have looked everywhere for these items and can't seem to find them! It's starting to make me go crazy since I know they exist and are around here somewhere....but where??

Where is your Land of the Lost Items at your house? Maybe it will give me some idea to where my items are...

P.S. Just after I wrote this, I found the scoop and measuring spoons in the couch cushion. Unfortunately, none of the other items were there.

Straight from the Garden Sauce

One of Clayton's favorite things to do these days is to pick the ripened veggies from the garden. He might only eat the cucumbers in their original state, but he does enjoy the other vegetables when cooked in something. And I love creating new recipes to sneak in some of those most-needed nutrients.

In trying to use these fresh items from the garden, as well as make the requested spaghetti and meatballs for Clayton's birthday dinner, I came up with a homemade spaghetti sauce! Recipe as follows:

6 large tomatoes, peeled and seeded

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 medium onion, finely chopped (I was suprisingly out, so substituted Tasefully Simple's Onion Onion and, of course, it was perfect! Plus, NO TEARS!!)

1 medium zucchini, shredded

1 small can of tomato paste

1 small bunch, each, parsley, basil, and oregano

2 Tbl Olive Oil

Heat oil, onions and garlic in a large saucepan until tender. Peel tomatoes, cut in half, and squeeze as much of the seeds out as possible. (If you find the tomatoes are difficult to peel, place them in a pot of boiling water for 30-60 seconds, then shock in a bowl of ice water. The peel should come of easily.) Place in blender and puree. (If you like your sauce chunky, then just pulse a bit.) Rinse zucchini thoroughly and shred using a cheese grater or something in the like. Add tomatoes, zucchini, and tomato paste to the pot. Stir and let flavors meld together.

Chop the parsley, basil and oregano, after de-stemming, and add to the mix. Salt and pepper to taste. The longer you let it simmer, the better! It was devoured by all!!
